Finally Apple rolls out iOS 8 updates to iPhone and iPad users, after first displayed publicly at its annual developer conference in June.

Here's how to get iOS 8 on your iPhone or iPad. Before start updating your device, make sure that battery is full and you are using wifi, as the update is huge, almost 1.1GB. Also hundreds of millions of Apple's smartphone and tablet users are upgrading at the same time, so may be you can't get the update, or receive the notification instant.

Here are the steps you should take before you click yes on that update alert.

    1. Check your device is compatible with iOS 8

The latest software version is is compatible with iPhone 4s handsets and later, iPad 2 tablets and later, iPad mini and iPad mini with Retina display, and iPod touch (5th generation) devices.

Compatible devices : iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPad Air, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini 2 with Retina display, iPad mini, Fifth-generation iPod touch.

    2. Back up your data

Use iCloud or iTunes to back up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Keep in mind that the backup will include purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books; photos and video in the Camera Roll; and device settings, but it won't include anything you synced from your computer like videos and songs you added through your computer. To re-sync that stuff you'll need to sync with iTunes.

    3. Make some data space on your device

If you have limited or low storage space on your phone you may not be able to perform the update - it's a fairly huge download. To get ready, you can remove content you no longer need, which is a good idea in any case.

    4. Make sure you're connected to WiFi

Because the size of some update files are huge, downloading over a Wi-Fi connection is recommended.

How to download iOS 8 on your iPhone or iPad

iOS 7 users and earlier can upgrade over-the-air on compatible devices by going to Settings > General > Software Update. However, we saw with the previous update last year that had many users frustrated that the update was slow to download, or would not finish downloading. It may take repeated attempts.

Alternatively, Windows and Mac users can connect their compatible iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices to the latest version of iTunes (which must be installed to use iOS 8), and upgrade by selecting the Check for Upgrade button in their device's summary window.

Or, users can download the software bundle (.IPSW) files from Apple's website for offline installations in the coming hours. Enterprise users can use Apple's Phobos server for download links.
